I have a 11 year old dog, hes a flat-coated retriever/border collie, we want to start him on iams senior dog formula, but we also have a 4 year old border collie/black lab. We don't want to have to buy two seperate bags of dog food. So is it okay to feed my 4 year old border collie/lab the iams senior pet formula or will we have to buy two seperate bags of food?

Why not change them both to something for all life stages? Feeding the 4 yr old senior food is a bad idea, especially with such an athletic breed. You'd end up having to feed the young dog a lot more just to keep weight on it. If you insist on feeding IAMS, why not buy 2 smaller bags instead of one large bag?

Iams is not a good food. It contains corn which is extremely unhealthy for the dogs. I would suggest you switching them to Natures Recipe Adult dog food. It is all natural and completely healthy.

Remember to switch them gradually. You also want to keep your 4 year old on Adult food. Senior food contains ingredients for the older dogs and is not healthy for dogs under 7 years.

You can get Natures Recipe Adult and Natures Recipe Senior at your local Pet Smart or Petco.

Also Natures Recipe cuts down on shedding, bad breath and the amount of stool your dogs produce.

Many senior formulas are rather low protein - that will make the 4 yr old inclined to muscle injuries. Given a choice, unless he has some health issues,I would rather feed the 11 year old regular adult food (my 15 yr old gets that & is doing just fine thank you).

Yes you can. It will be an easier digestable food with more nutrients probably. Just keep an eye on the 4 year old and make sure that it doesnt become overwieght

feed the older dog the same food as you would feed the younger dog.. just give him less to avoid unnessary weight gain

Yes you can. The Senior dog food just has less fat in it. It also has different little things in the older dog food for the older dogs, like, for example, to help them live longer, and to strengthen their body's, since they are old.
