A lot of that depends on what kind of dye you used. A semi-permanent (level 1) lasts 8-10 shampoos. A demi-permanent (level 2) lasts about 6 weeks. A permanent dye (level 3) will last until it's cut out or dyed out.

Then you have to leave the dye on for however long the instructions, and your strand test, dictate. Different types of hair, and different colors, will absorb dye at different rates.

There are a lot of factors that contribute in a successful dye job. The next time you want to color your hair, take the box to a salon, and get them to give you some tips. Or just have it done at a salon to begin with.

Well usually your supposed to wash your hair first, and then put the die in. Let it sit for about 30 minutes to an hour at the most, and then she rinse it out. It works better on African-Americans hair because of the texture, it's very absorbing, thick, and beautiful!

You may have just gotten a rinse and not a dye. You probably didnt do anything wrong but if you call the company then they will help you decide if the dye will give you the results that you want. You may even consider going to a professional before wasting tons of money and time trying to do it yourself. 40.00 now saves you pain like this later.

You may have purchased and used a semi-permanent hair dye that rinses out in a couple of days, instead of a permanent hair dye. However, if you did buy a permanent hair dye and it washed out, I suggest that you visit your hairdresser and he/she may recommend a suitable dye for your hair.

Make sure that you left it on long enough. I have the same problems depending on what dye i use. If it's cheap my hair won't hold color so it could be the brand too!!
