a billion different species. Hawks, hummingbirds, song birds, kestrels, etc.
You can see wild parrots as well- usually escaped pets.
The warm climate and the coast make it ideal for a lot of species of birds.

There have been 631 species of birds recorded in the state of California, more species than any other state in the union. Here is a link to the list:

I love birding in California! You get great birds like California and LeConte's Thrashers, Wrentits, Oak and Juniper Titmice, Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees. There are sa couple of species found nowhere else in the world, California Gnatcatcher and Yellow-billed Magpie. On the coast there are many different kinds of sandpipers, gulls and other water birds. Like I said, I love birding in California!

My wife and I went down to Bolsa Chica ecological Reserve one Saturday, and identified 35 different birds. American Kestrels, Turkey vultures, Killdeers, Snowy egrets, Greater Eagrets Great Blue Herons, Reddish Herons, Green Herons, Coots, Ospreys, White tailed Kites, Buffelheads, Mallards, California Gulls, Sandpipers of several different varieties, Plovers, Brown , and White Pelicans, Cassins finch, Marble Godwits, Rock Pigeons, Sea Scooters, American Avocet, I'm sure I saw a golden eagle, but it moved before I could make a positive identification on it, Red Tailed Hawks, Meadowlarks, and many more.
Go to Borders, or some other bookstore, and check out one of the field guides they have for sale from the Audubon society, or National Geographic, or a couple of others.

WILD BIRDS: Crows, hawks, pigeons, blue-jays, ravens, blue birds, morning doves, ringnecks, parrots, owls, woodpeckers, sparrows, nightingales, (and many more I can't think of at the moment).
BIRDS IN CAPTIVITY (exotics): All breeds of parrots, including orange winged amazons, blue front amazons, red lored amazons, meyers parrots, macaws including military macaws, african grays, parakeets, canaries, finches, doves, ringnecks, love birds, homing pigeons and many , many more...
Birds are loyal, beautiful, make great pets for those who want to venture into the commitment of caring for one. A parrot's life expect ency is 30-70 years.
