Almost NO dog will make a good guard dog when it comes to physically defending its family because 99.9% of dogs who are pets DO NOT have good nerves, nor do they have the drives and genes to do it. These dogs will run when threatened/challenged. A house pet that is aggressive and bites is an unstable dog with weak nerves. Only dogs who come from well-bred lines can do this type of work with proper protection training and a Pack Leader oriented handler/owner. When given the proper protection training, they make safe family protectors. German Shepherds and the Belgian Malinois are the most commonly used breeds for personal protection, law enforcement, and search and rescue work. Just because you have a German Shepherd or a Malinois doesn't that your dog can do this type of work. It needs to have good nerves, prey, defensive and fight drive. If one of these are missing, your dog can't do it. The best you can expect out of your typical dog, as far as guarding, is barking. To me, this is enough, and anyone who dares to go through a large dog that is barking needs to be taken down immediately.

I'm sorry, but I have to comment on Texas's answer before I give an answer. Pit bulls do not make good gaurd dogs. If you train them to be mean, they'll cause a lot of damage and you could have a lawsuit just around the corner which will make sure you never have another penny for the rest of your life. If you train them right, and socialize them and such, the most they'll do is lick a person to death. And his comment about having one with AIDS, he's just a sick twisted person.

As for which one makes a good guard dog, chow chows are very family oriented, and are st. bernards, german shepherds, and great danes. St Bernards are good if you have kids, they'll become very protective of them. Great danes are the same way and are a bit more intimidating, as they are larger. GSD's are wonderful, but as a personal experience I don't think they're good with kids - just my opinion.

Best dog I ever had growing up was a Boxer. Loved and devoted to the family but bit the intruder trying to rob the house at 2 AM.

If you need something smaller, Boston Terriers are family oriented also, and mine is very protective of me with strangers.

I say rottie because they are so big and intimidating. I had one before that would have killed if my life was threatened. He was a rescue and he was totally devoted to me.
