I know that it's normal for cats to shed, but he's a one and a half year old tabby, and his hair is EVERYWHERE! I don't know if this is so normal, but I've never had a cat who sheds as much as he does. Does anyone have any suggestions on to what I can do to make him shed less? He's not overly stressed or anything, and it's the middle of winter - is he okay?

You need to make sure that you brush your cat at least three to four times a week right now. You can give it "Pounce Hairball" to make sure that this doesn't become a problem, but this should only be as a treat. Try to correct the problem with food if it is not a medical problem. There are many "new" formulas out there. Some of them are a little on the expensive side, but better for your animal in the long run. There is a comb out called, "Shed Ender." It really works. I have had wonder success with it. You will have to comb your cat several times a week, but once you get all of the excess hair off, you can minimize your combing to a couple of times a week. This can also be some bonding time for you and your cat. Most importantly, make sure that your kitty is medically okay. Excessive shedding, different than normal can be a medical condition (maybe thyroid) problem. Good luck.

We have a miniature dachshund and he is wonderful! He does not need tons of exercise (we still take him on walks) and he never barks, although some dachshunds wills. He has longhair but the smooth coat is an option to, but they are known as a dog breed that barely sheds. He is also VERY sweet. When we talked to the breeder, she told us that male dogs are known to be more affectionate because just like humans, the females are more likely to get moody. We love him to death. Dogs can be expensive. You have to buy him a leash and harness (harnesses are good for small dogs), food and water bowl, toys, crate, crate bed, food, etc. Those can add up to 75-100 dollars but it is just the big beginning stuff. Puppy shots can be about 50 dollars each visit and you will probably have to go two or three times. The big thing after that is getting a dog fixed. We have not done this yet so I am not sure of the cost. Yearly checkups and replenishing dog food and new toys, and when he is crate trained, a dog bed... will be the rest of your exspenses.

Sometimes when a cat sheds it is due to pore health. Most of the time it is only minor health problems. Call your vet and voice your concerns about his problem. My cat sheds the same way and then I found out that he had a skin problem. Just talk to your vet about it. No one on here can make your cat stop shedding. Just try to find the reason for his shedding. Good luck.

If he isn't stressed- switch to higher quality cat food. Poor nutrition can cause major shedding in cats.
He may also be just a shedder genetically. Brush him a lot. Winter means nothing especially if they are inside. My outdoor horse is even shedding right now- and our temps, though they are warmer for the year, are still around 10 degrees.

Be sure to use a high quality cat food...not from grocery store. Use Science Diet, Iams, Authority from PetsMart. Cats need essential fatty acids for a healthy coat and you can find them in the premium foods--they eat less of it and poop less of it too---since their bodies utilize more of the nutrients.

IT'S 2007, NOT 1977, WAX OR SHAVE FOR GOD'S SAKE

Oh, my bad, I misread the question. Short-haired tabbies sometimes shed alot. Brush him alot and consider whether you're feeding him cheap food.

Shes prob just shedding her baby fur. Brush her out with a slicker brush everyday to get all the loose hair. Its normal.

Brush him daily, and slowly switch him to a higher-quality cat food, perhaps supplementing with canned food.
