The idea of a telegraph is when you close a cirqiut on one end - something happens on the other end. The most primitive model of a "telegraph" is a light swithc. You swith it on and off, the lightbulb lights. If you put the lightbulb in the other room - here you go, you can send signals with light. Now we can think about how to buil this and improve on this. To make a cirquit exactly like this, all you need is a hookup wire, a battery and a small ligtbulb (like for a bike light) and a switch. You can buy all these components at Fry's or better yet at an electronic component store.

Instead of a regular switch that has "on" and "off" positions, you can get a srping-loaded switch that stays open unless you keep pressing it. This is commonly known as a button. :-)

In place of a lightbulb, you can use a buzzer or you can even build a little plotter. Depending on how much time you have. To build a plotter you will need an inductive coil that will act as an electromagnet wich will push the pen out. You will also have to come up with a device that will pull the paper underneath that pen. This part would be harder to design than the rest of the project.

A telegraph is just a reaaaallllllyyy long circuit with a button switch on one side and a buzzer on the other. They are honestly that easy. Just be sure you get a buzzer, not a speaker.
