make sure its a HOUSE cat ( keep it inside), cats live longer if they are house cats, (I found that out the HARD way), never let it eat any plants you have in the house, always ALWAYS have food and water in his/her bowl, always ALWAYS have the litter box cleaned out WITH litter in it, always ALWAYS love it and pay attention to it and make sure he/she has toys to play w/ (they LOVE to play, MAKE SURE to get his/her vaccinations, MAKE SURE to get Vet check-ups every once in a while, when something is wrong (or you think is wrong) w/ him/her take him/her to the VET!!!
OR JUST DON'T GET A CAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE HEARING ABOUT AN ANIMAL DYING!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, make sure you start out with a healthy pet. Even most shelters have already tested for FIV and have had the animal spayed or neurtered. You should take the animal to the vet as soon as you adopt it to get a good physical done. Most success with keeping a pet longer is to keep the pet completely inside. Especially a cat or kitten. This way, they are not exposed to anything, another animal, cars, etc. Feed them a healthy diet, play with it and have your animal check anually. Be vigilent about your pets behavior so that you can see if anything is abnormal. Any time there is any abnormal, get vet assistance. Most animals are not that expensive unless they develop a problem. I had my last cat for 18 years. She was pretty healthy and the last 15 months, she developed diabetes. We made a couple of thousand dollar (or more) trips to the NCSU vet school in Raleigh, NC, but she lived a healthy, good life even after her diabetes diagnosis. Good vet, good food, clean litter and water, good owner = long time friend.

Do you feed it and give it water? How do they die in a year? Maybe you should STOP getting animals. Start with a plant....
