I know absolutely nothing about photography and I think that this is a hobby I would like to pursue. What's the very first step? Any recommendations on cameras?

If you are in the USA go to your nearest Goodwill. Pick up a point and shoot Canon,Nikon or Olympus 35mm camera for 5 bucks. Play with it for a couple of weeks to see if you like it. I nabbed a Olympus Stylus Epic for $4.75 once. I found a Canon AV-1 35mm SLR with lens for $25 another time. I picked up a Nikon FE with lens for $2.12 at another thrift shop because it was jammed. All it needed was a battery.
Often there are older photography books for 50 cents. Photographic technique hasn't changed all that much just the image forming material. These old books are still informative. Don't forget the library.
Going this route it may help you decide if you want a prosumer digital or DSLR with a minimal investment.

Like you said its a hobby. If you are a crazy hobby enthusist (like me) you mess around with all sorts of cameras. Ive messed with film, small compact digital cameras, Nikon, Sony, Canon, SLRs. Ive mess around with a lot of different cameras (doesnt mean I want to be a professional I just find it fun). Your first steps will be, how much am I willing to spend and how far do you intend to go with photography. My first steps was my grandfathers old 1930's film camera. He showed me it and showed me his pictures and ever since then, I had to be with a camera. Spend $200-300 on a small camera like the Canon A640. It has auto features and has manuel so you can learn how to use manuel features as you get advance. As you get more into photography everything starts falling into place. Subscibe to a photography magazine and buy a few books on photography so you can learn the tricks of the trade.

First of all, photography can be a very expensive hobby, especially in DLSR world. Once you hooked up in this, you will buy and buy to assist you in getting good shots.
Anyway, first thing first, is to buy photography magazine and other reference book to read. Then get an entry-level of DSLR. Try as many shots as you like while reading the reference book.

the very first step is to get the basic...so get a book or go to a course at your city or college...then buy a camera and start shooting...practice is the best teacher you can get and with digital cameras you dont have to spend money for film anymore
