Unfortunately both do, these are vary questionable, violent, and trying times, man truly is at a cross road with religion, and at present dose not have the answer to this dilemma, he is blinded by greed and power, creating war and conflicts so man against man will kill one another, governments push multiculturalism knowing it causes violence amongst men, hatred has become malignant in the hearts of men, and continues to escalate, and I do not see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I think it would depend on what religious text you are following, & who wrote it.
They are all written by man or woman. But there are still some in this world who's religion and fellow followers are not hateful at all.
But far too many are hatemongers! As for those people, I think they learn it from both! It is an exponential desease that feeds on it's self and grows!

Man does because religions are corrupted by man.The religion is not at fault as much as the interpreter. We all put are own spin on what each faith teaches.I ,personally am spiritual, not religious,God talks to me from within on a one on one basis.Guiding me to love my fellow man

We seem to have this innate urge to compete and gain an advantage in some way over others. There are positive ways to compete, and there are negative ways to compete. The negative ways of competing (inciting hatred, and descrimination without basis, ie. judgement) are simply a means of influencing and manipulating others to give one's self a competitive advantage.
.
James 4 explains why envy, false pride, and judgement are destructive.

Religions come to lead people to the "way of life"... it's mankind who do foolish things, and then blame the religion for it.
It's mankind that wrecks life, not the religion.
Peace.
