You're supposed to have food out, available for kittens at all times. It says so on the kitten chow label.

My best guess is a poor quality of food? She needs a high quality kitten food. And you shouldn't leave food out all day for her to just help herself. You need to be able to monitor the food intake for both your cats, but especially the kitten because if something IS wrong with her, the vet is going to need to know what she's eating and when. My kitten, Chase, is doing very well with canned Science Diet Chicken and Liver Kitten formula. Also, keep food off the counters when you can't keep an eye on her. However, you should probably take her to the vet for testing to make sure she doesn't have any form of worms or intestinal parasites, which could also be the problem if the little buggers are eating all the food before her body has a chance to absorb it and use it. Best of luck to you and your babies :-)

She is a growing kitten who sounds like she feels as if she has to compete for food. Was she a stray before you got her?? I would suggest you separate the cats at feeding time. Put her in a room where you're kitten can eat her food and then let her out once you're older cat is finished.
If she was a stray who is just not used to having food, then she should eventually learn that you will always have food for her, but this isn't a guarantee. Maybe you'll just always have to separate them to make them eat the appropriate amount.

short of a serious illness... diabetes, thyroid problems, worms... etc.. I would suggest that she is simply a growing kitten...
my kitten was a stray, I took her in and she ate all the time... I went through a one gallon bag of food in a matter of days, but she didnt seem to gain any weight... my vet checked her out and said that she just needed to get used to her new surroundings (i.e having food available at all times) and was simply a growing kitten... she is now starting to gain some weight and not be so boney - we have had her for a little over a month...

Rule out diabetes particularly if the kitten is drinking water all the time too.
Make sure that it is really eating alot more than other cats. It could be that the kitten is just growing.

Has she been wormed? That could be it because worms will take the nutrients from the kitten that she would be getting from the food. Also the lower the ash in the food is better because it will stay with her longer than higher ash food that they tend to expel sooner.

Your cat my have "hyperthyroidism." Many animals have the same problem as humans. Kitty needs some blood work done and may be very correctable with medication. Usually have to take it life long, but not that expensive. Definitely need to have vet assessment. If the vet does not offer to do blood work, find another one.

cant say for sure but i know that your kitten might have worms .
they will eat like lions when they have worms and that's what your cat is doing .
i suggest you take the kitten in for the shots and all the vet will know for sure if the kitten has worms
this can be fatal so don't wait long.
