I'm a big fan of the bark collars. Sure they hurt, but only when the dog barks, and they figure this out fast. I use the remote control type on my dog to correct bad behaviors and it works amazingly well. This was my last resort and I only wish I had started to use it from the beginning.

If we're talking about a No-Bark collar, then that should do that trick. I've heard some good things about Tri-Tronics No Bark Limiter. It's a bit expensive, but if you do get a cheaper model, dogs will learn to work around it. Cheap no-bark collars are programmed to go off when it detects a certain frequency. Dogs will learn that if they bark in a certain tone, the collar will not go off. Forget about the collars that make noise when the dog barks. The noise is supposed to stop the dog from barking. They don't work. Also, your solution might be simple. Take him out for 1 hour walks, daily. Dogs that bark too much is an obvious sign of boredom.

I've heard of shock collars working well on dogs. It may seem cruel but seems to do the trick for dogs that are constantly barking. Another idea that my mom used to get her dog to stop jumping was when he jumped she would say no then spray him with water from a spray bottle. It's enough to catch the dog off guard. Muzzles just seem mean because the dog can't open his mouth, and collars can be pricy. So try the spray bottle thing~ they only cost about a dollar. Good luck!

I'd say get a squirt bottle of "bitter apple" (can be purchased at pet stores or dog training places, etc)!! Each time your dog starts barking, tell him "Quiet!", then open his mouth with your hands & spray 1 squirt of bitter apple in his mouth. No dogs like bitter apple... Keep telling him "Quiet" followed by a squirt of bitter apple into his mouth until he stops barking.
If you're consistent with this training, your dog will learn the command "Quiet", & next time, you won't even need that bitter apple liquid anymore. I think a bottle of bitter apple is still cheaper than a shock collar, too, & it may even be more effective (I've heard that some dogs learn not to bark only when they have the shock collar on?)
I've trained my German Shepherd to stop chewing on my hands & to stop barking with this method, and it worked really well. It also works on my Pomeranian, who is even more of a barker than my German Shepherd, which is great, because I couldn't even imagine myself using a shock collar on my Pom since he might get so scared that he might pee all over himself & make a mess in the house!!

ok here we go, there are so so many reasons why dogs bark and everyone pretty much knows these reasons. But always very very important to know your dogs bark, just like your babies cry. They have different tones kinda like a additude like all of us do. Start off with step one, when the dog starts to bark, go asap and investagate, with out the dog seeing you. Try to find out why the dog is barking, is it cuz they see someone something is it cold or hot is it for attention from you so so many reasons, but you have to narrow it down. If you cant figure out why then the dog is scared or lonely or just being a stinker, remember the dogs bark is his voice, we people talk with out mouth they bark, Bring dog inside or change the area fenced in or ect. move dog around different areas and distract the dog for a few minutes and they my forget or maybe not forget.Take my advice im a pro at this cus i have 4 dachshunds and i did all that plus, but most of the time when i hear my dogs bark i can tell y. Most of the time they dont stop and thats cuz we have 3 trees in the yard close to the fence and wow do we have squarles, they instagate my dogs , its bad, but guess what works, a whistle. use it only for disapline one soft blow or two and wow watch them, they have great great ears, so the soft whistle is LOUD to them and boy do them stop in 1 second. i only had to do that a few times and now when they bark and i see its cuz them darn squarles all i have to do is knock on window and show them the whistle. They put there heads down and walk away . they know

All the people who say you should hit the dog are ignorant. I, too, have a problem dog from the pound, and it's always been a struggle. However, there are many ways to work with it. Shocking the dog will only increase it's aggresiveness, and cause it to become fearful. What you could try are "Good Dog", which you put into the dog's water daily and, although I don't recall the brand name, dog pheremones. They plug into a wall socket and distribute dog pheremones which, to humans, are virtually undetectable. You can buy those at Petco. To work on the underlying issue, however, you should try socializing your dog more- taking it to a dog park socializes it with both dogs and humans, on walks, or to a dog training class. Please, for both of your sakes, do not use pain to "treat" this problem. On a side note, muzzles only stop a dog from biting, not barking.

My grandmother uses a water bottle on her dog when he barks for no reason. Just get a spray bottle and when the dog barks if there is no reason for it to the spray it in the face or neck a couple of times but also tell him to stop. It works pretty good with her dog.

shock collars won't work and muzzles deffinitely won't work. What kind of dog is it? Barking is one of your dogs forms of communication. He wants attention in some way, so the best thing to do is to ignore the dog COMPLETELY every time it barks unnecessarily. Even if you correct the dog by saying "no", you're still giving the attention that he's asking for so you must give him the cold shoulder. As soon as he stops for an acceptable amount of time, give him lavish attention and praise.

Barking is a SYMPTOM. find the cause, and treat it. I discourage "soothing" it's attention, good attention and your dog will associate barking with attention. Calmly acknowledge the bark and ignore. Your dog may be trying to alert you to something it sees as a threat to you or your home- he justs wants you to acknowlege it. "okay spot" should be sufficient. Wind chimes also mask outside noises that dogs consider bark worthy. Just a few things... BTW- shock collar- hilarious? I think not. YOU wear it for a day before you decide to put it on your pooch!

Shock collars can work if you are consistent and the dog learns to associate the shock with the barking.i used a shock collar to stop excessive whining in the car and it worked reasonably well.
