My fiance (will be husband by the time he starts basic training) has joined the Marines and what I do almost completely depends on what I can do with my dog because she is like my child. Is it possible to have her live with us on base?

If not, how does one get authorized to live off base?

Yes, your dog can live with you on base. My husband is military and we are in Germany, I would say that more than half of the people who live on base have dogs or cats, we brought our cat with us. If you are stationed in the States then you don't have to get authorization to live off base as long as you are married, if you get stationed overseas then the rules will vary. When we first moved here only certain ranks could live off base. In this community they are now letting almost anyone live off base.
P.S.- If you already know where you will be stationed, then you can look up the base on www.military.com.
In fact you can go to that web-site anyway, sign up as a spouse, it has lots of useful information.

if that's a husky or malamute, you shouldn't have too much problem, but if it is part wolf, it won't be allowed on base. Also, keep in mind that not all housing accepts dogs, or even pets, and you only qualify based on paygrade and BR entitlement, not on whether or not you have pets.

also, Overseas quarentine regs can vary from country to country as well.

using BAH to live off base typically isn't a huge issue, although finding a rental property that accepts dogs could be. Plus you may find that you will be paying out of pocket for pet fees, deposits and the like.

If you chose to live in base housing, a dog is allowed but you will have to put up a fence. If you live in TLF (temporary living facility) while you are waiting for a house on base, you will need to call before hand and let them know that you have a dog and will need TLF that allows animals. You will have to take his/her shot records with you when you check into TLF (and probably base housing).

If you are married, there should not be anything you have to do to live off base, you just don't sign up for base housing. If you are not married, then he would have to be an E-4 or higher to live off base.

Your best bet is to contact the housing authority at each military base, if you're planning on staying on base. You do not require authorization to live off base, he does. And this is most only done depending on his rank, then whether it is deemed necessary for him to be in the household (not likely).

It depends on which base you live it. I know on our base, some of the houses you cannot have pets. I would contact the base housing at the base you're going to and find out before you move.

Yes hon dogs are allowed on military bases. I know alot of famlies that are military and most have dogs. You do however have to have him registured and up to date on shots and when you fill out your housing form put on there that you will have pets. A lot of bases also have fenced yards for this reason.

In order to live off base you just accept BAQ and inform them you will be residing off base that simple

A dog is allowed in a military base but must be properly kept in a secured place. This must not mix with the K9 dogs.

Sure thing, any military housing assigned is yours to live in. The catch is they have to put a tracking microchip in your dog's shoulder/back so your dog will become one with the borg (our joke when my dog had it)
