The advice I am about to give you is the best advice you are going to get believe me. In your position I would go for a four year old Skoda VRS. Your eight grand will get you a relatively low millage car and if you get lucky you might come across a three year old car with a bit higher mileage.
With the Skoda you get VW, MERC and BMW quality and reliability without the added costs. Insurance is cheaper, the repairs are cheaper and with Skoda now under the control of VW the street cred too.
Why fork out for a five or six year old high millage VW Golf when you can have a near identical car with the Skoda for less money.
OK saying you own a Skoda doesn't sound as good as saying you own a BMW or MERC but you will be the one having the last laugh.
Also another tip to reduce the cost of your insurance is to take out a policy that that determines the millage you are likely to make in the new car in a year. Stick to the agreed millage and not only do you save money but your premiums will go now next year quite a lot
All the best Andrew D

Get a VW Corrado VR6...brilliant cars,0-60...6.4 secs...top speed 146mph. A good 1995 model on 70,000 miles would be around £5000. Nothing else will give you that performance and handling for so little. Golf GTi , Honda Civic Type R,...close but no cigar.

you have got many options
japaneese - skyline,200sx,supra,
japaneese cars ae known for being solid and reliable but as with any performance car - they can be a bit tempermental - id recomend a skyline r32 gtr 0 - 60 of 5ish secs bags of potential aswell - solid engine (derived from a race spec engine) and its a bigish car and reilable providing the boost is tuned up! but bear in mind it will be an import so insurance could pose a problem
german audi tt, vw golf gti,
with german cars you can garuntee the reliability will be top notch look for a car with fsh and you cant go wrong audi tt is your best bet for german o-60 6.6 secs the refinement of a new'ish car and reliabilty of audi
any of them two i think are the best options but it all depends on what ur main focus is - performance or reliabilty at a comprimise of performance...

All cars cost a fortune to repair these days, you will have to learn the art of gentle driving and save yourself a load of money.
Dont go for anything with a lot of fancy extras on them, you dont need it and the more you have on it the more there is to go wrong, go German, thats my advice, VW, Mercedes, etc, I have a 1980 Mercedes, no frills, drive it with care and it never breaks down take it to a local garage for mots & servicing, I cant afford a Mercedes garage! but you can get a great mercedes for 8 thou, and they look bloody impressive as well! a two liter one will go like the wind and the fuel bills are not that horrendous, girls love them and you wont look like a cliched boy racer, while leaving their punk asses at the lights..

nicely, i'm effective we the two be responsive to the outdated asserting that money talks and each of something walks. for a used vehicle for reliability, non-family contributors, this could be palms down toyota or honda. yet is paying the top rate for a sixteen y.o. boy extremely unquestionably worth the dividends. this is all too based on the way he drives and cares for, or abuses, his journey. individually, i might positioned him an older Caprice or Crown Vic for countless reasons, and enable him situation concerning the gas bill. Teaches responsibilty, extremely with money. despite if, if he's conventional to be the exception to the guideline, and wont bend to work out stress, then the unique plan of Honda or Toyota makes ideal experience, as they're going to preserve abit of their fee if cared for and could be straight forward to sell whilst it's time to improve. with the help of how, a carfax is often a sturdy theory on any used vehicle, until eventually its in basic terms some outdated $200 door slammer, not what you indicated as searching for.

I'm with Mark B - Skoda without a doubt - but go for the Octavia RS, you'll have more fun and street cred.

Honda + Toyota hands down. German cars aren't built like they used to. If you buy German, be prepared to spend a lot of money on repairs-parts are expensive.
