Depends on the prison, state, and their policies for time served. Some prisons do a day for a day. Meaning, for everday of "good behavior", you earn another day served. In that case, it would mean, if you did six months without an problem, you would be counted for a year served.

In the case of the earlier answer, it would seem for every three days of "good behavior", you would earn a day of time served.

It just depends on how the prison policies work. Also, some sentances will sprecifically not allow this for certain crimes.

If you are asking how many months will a prisoner actually serve upon each year of a prison sentence, the answer is that neither I nor anybody else knows until you tell us at least what jurisdiction you are talking about.

In California it varies from a time reduction of 0% (for life sentences) to 15% (for violent felonies) to 20% (for "two strike" or "three strike" case) to 1/3 (for good behavior) to 50% (for participation in work or education programs).

I believe it depends on the individual and the how serious their crime was. Also depends on how cooperative they are when they get to prison.

You will often hear: "he will get 5 years, but will be out in 2 or 3 with good behavior."

GOOD behavior only works if the person is willing to pay their consequences and not get into any trouble. (including fights, conficts, etc.)

I have heard that you get 1 day off for each day you work. You probably don't work for the first few weeks. So it is close to half-time.
