Have the recruiter tape test you for your body fat percentage. For the Navy and Coast Guard the maximum body fat percentage for a female (at least in age group of 22) is 33%. The maximum for the Army is 32% and I'm pretty sure both the Marines and Air Force are 27%. The Coast Guard and Navy measure using the Circumference Method which is a measurement of your neck, waist and hips (I'm not sure if they even factor in your weight), and the other branches use a neck, hips, forearm and wrist measurement that also factors in your weight. For some reason the different methods have a huge difference in what your actual body fat is. For the Navy method I'm about 7% over, but with the Army method I'm only 2% over. I am not sure what the weight limist are exactly, but if you go to about.com you can look up all kinds of information on what limits they have. They will accept you if you carry a bit of extra weight, but it has to be within limits. I'm in the same boat you are in, I've lost about 57 pounds, and have around 20 to go. It's so frustrating, but once we get in and through it what an accomplishment!!! I talked to the Navy recruiter recently and he recommended that I do cardio workouts for 45 minutes (4 or 5 times a week) at 60-75% of my hearts maximum rate of beats per minute (comes out to about 153) this helps you burn fat faster. Do an internet search on "target heart rate" and you should be able to figure out what yours is. Good luck, and don't give up!!!

As far as I know, since I was, they let you go to boot camp at the upper thresh hold limit of the weight standards. You *should* lose that weight through boot camp, but sometimes you don't. (Muscle weighs more than fat). In any case if you are allowed to go to boot camp, and make it through, once you are out in the regular military you can be overweight or "out of standards". However there is a catch. At least in the Navy there was. That is, if you fail your weigh in three times in a row (Navy does it every 6 months) then you are withheld from promotions and other things that can benefit you. I believe that after the three failures they can also take administrative action and discharge you, but I am not positive.
The point is, is that as long as you are within the limits of weight as far as your weight class (determined by age, sex, and height) you should be okay to join and go to boot camp. Again you *should* lose the weight during boot camp.
It is possible that they will put you on a diet throughout the course of boot camp as well, it sucks, but they won't let you die. Recruits cost a lot. That and there is just a ton of paperwork involved. Hope this helps!

No, they won't accept you into the Army if you are over their weight standards. My husband was only 2 pounds over and they told him he had to lose those two pounds before he could enlist, the recruiter would weigh him. My friend was overweight and wanted to join the Army. The recruiter actually had two female shoulders go to her house daily and go with my friend to show her how to exercise and to run with her. When she lost the weight she was finally allowed to enlist. Talk to a local recruiter, he will know the weight standard for your age and height and he can at least get the process of your enlistment started while you shed those last pounds. Good Luck.

Speak to a Recruiter,, they have a system where they will use a tape measurer (sewing style) and measure your neck and belly and get a body percentage number. They have requirements that u have to be in for this. Good luck

it doesn't matter if you are over weight or not, they would except you as long as you are strong and willing to do anying.
But i would still think that you should loose the weight so that it would be a little bit easier for you when you join.
Good Luck.

That's true, but even if you are slightly overweight when you enter, you won't be for long.
