It is not healthy to try to suppress all emotions out of fear of feeling depressed. It is also not fair to yourself - how can it be when you are potentially denying yourself feeling all the good emotions that exist?

It is okay to feel the so called 'negative' emotions - it is what you do with them that counts. It is also important to note that because you feel emotions, does not mean that you will become depressed. Depression is a medical diagnosis that is not based solely on the feeling of emotion.

On the scientific end, there are studies which suggest suppressing emotions can have a negative effect on an individual including affecting your memory. Also it is suggested that not expressing them does not mean that you are not feeling them, just that you are internalising them.

The bottom line, is that while you avoid feeling the emotions, nature will take it course and you will experience them in one way or another. It is far better to learn to deal with them as they occur than to deal with the aftermath when they finally catch up to you.

Go ahead and feel emotions. You'll be happier and healthier for it. Just pick the right venue, and the right way to express them.

I let that happen to me, the emotion will always be there but we can block it and that is extremely bad for us. The emotion has to be somewhere and will build up inside and fester, almost cancerous and some have said certain illnesses can occur in us as the body will react in some way eventually. If we only use our mind and dont feel with our hearts we will become hardened and thats when we stop feeling. I have been a "runner" all my life, not so now but by talking to certain professionals and getting things out has helped me get my feeling back. It was all the hurt I could not face. We need to deal with our problems and move onwards or we wont be able to deal with others that come along and they will and then things just get worse. You can do it, its not easy divulging our inner self to others but what have we got to lose, it will bring great relief to your mind, body and soul in time believe me. .

It's so important not to deny yourself feeling any emotions. I spent my whole life doing so, and eventually it caught up with me and gave me a chronic illness. Nobody wants to face problems, but they are there and won't go away unless you shine some light on them. Life is all about ups and downs, unless you let the downs in the ups will never get that high. When it finally caught up with me it wrestled me to the ground and made me feel like I was going crazy - but I was just in so much pain from all the suffering. Please find a healthy way to experience the problems and learn to deal with them now - your life will be so very much richer if you do.

No hun, its not safe. One day something little is going to get to you and you have so much emotion built up, that you are going to lose it. If you don't want to "show" your emotions, let them out some how. I used to keep a journal or write songs! There is nothing wrong with facing the problems!

It is hard to face problems, but if you don't work them out, they will stay with you until the day you die. So it's very unhealthy. These problems will effect you mentally, emotionally, and even physically. Get yourself a good counselor, over time you'll build up trust and you will be able to share these problems with him/her.

Nope-it actually makes it more likely that you will experience depression. You have to figure out a way to cope with your emotions in order to be healthy.

Emotions are often messy and confusing, but they are also normal and make life worth living.

This is very unhealthy! You need to deal with emotions in someway. You need to let them in and deal with them to let your body adjust and absorb them so it can go on and not hold them in and build up anger or curiousness about the what ifs even though you think you are not thinking about the unhealthy things in life we all think about them!

I do the same thing, and I know it is not good for me but do it anyway. Somehow it all comes back to you and you will end up feeling the result of all the supressed emotions. It isn't good to keep it completely bottled up. I find journal writing helps.
