My chihuahua is almost 3 years old. He weighs 10 lbs. He is too big for a small harness but too small for a medium harness. And he slips out of his collar unless it is very snug. Does anyone have any serius ideas about what I can do for him? He isn't fat he is solid too, so I am at a loss on what to do.

If I let the small harness all the way out is it still too small and if I tighten the medium harness all the way it is too big. So adjustable ones aren't any good either.

Go to PetSmart and take your Chi with you. Ask one of the employees to fit him with a nylon harness. That's what we did, and the woman waiting on us was very knowledgeable and patient, and fitted Stanly perfectly. We had to try three different harnesses in two different brands, but we got the perfect harness for his size and build.

Our vet told us to get Stanly a harness rather than a collar because puppies and small dogs are often susceptible to trachea problems that can be aggravated by collar tension on the throat.

(Our Stanly is a big boy for a purebred Chihuahua, he weighs 14-1/2 lbs. He is not overweight; at his last vet check we were told his weight is just right, for his size and build. He's just big; 12-1/2 " tall at the withers (shoulder) and 14" long from neck to base of tail last time he was measured. )

Try different types of collars, they come in all sizes. Take him to a pet store like Petco or petsmart that has tons of stuff to choose from. As for the harness, I dont really know what to tell you, if he has a properly fitting collar he shouldnt need a harness, its not like a 10 pound dog is going to drag you anywhere. :-) If nothing else, get him a chain collar that tightens when the dog pulls on it. If you dont like them just use it when you go out or for walks and keep another cute collar on all the time.

I have 2 small dogs one is 7 bls the other is 12 lbs. Both wear harnesses. Take the dog to petsmart, my 12lb dog wears a 12 or 15 inch harness you can always add a hole, but they have all sizes for all dogs.

Maybe try an adjustable harness rather than the ones that are a fixed size. I have one that fits both my 9lb maltese cross and my 4lb chihuahua!

Try one of those self adjustable cat leashes, that is what I have, works great. Go to a pet store and ask for a cat lead. Good luck!
