no
You ask, "isnt religeon nothing more than doctrine? a set of rules to live by?"...Well, atheism does NEITHER. It provides no set of rules to live by, and it provides no doctrine. The followers do not meet together to worship, we have no houses of worship, we have no holy texts, we have no dogma, and most importantly we do not have preachers or accept donations.
-We are not even CLOSE to being a religion, we reject religion

There is this saying, "If atheism is a religion, then baldness is a hair color".

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, religion is a belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe and it is a personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

Base of that definition, atheism is not a religion for a number of reasons:
1. Atheism doesn't believe in a supreme supernatural power as a creator.
2. Atheism doesn't have a clearly defined rules. An atheist can do and believe absolutely anything beyond gods and still fit the definition, that an atheists doesn't believe in a god or gods.
3. There is no clearly defined philosophy common to all or even most atheists. In fact, there is nothing inherent in the disbelief in god(s) which leads a person to any philosophy of life. Atheists believes in different philosophy, such as objectivism, hummanism, Marxist, etc.etc. Different people, different stokes.
4. It's not about understanding our existance. It's just about not believing in a deity or deities.
5. Atheism is a disbelief, not a philosophy.
6. Atheism don't have any distinction between sacred and profane objects.
7. Atheism doesn't have any prayers and other forms of communication with gods.

I think that atheism can be a religion. Just like people that believe in God, not all atheists are the same in their beliefs. Some atheists are communists. They clearly have their own books and doctrines. Some of them quote the books the same way some Christians use the Bible. Some are nazis. They also have books and doctrines. And just like some people that believe in God, atheists can also be intolerant and persecute people for being different from them. Just like some people who believe in God, some atheists also believe they are better than others due to their ideology. I think atheists are really no different than the rest of us and i think that in many cases an atheist really does have a belief system which she or he uses exactly the same way people that believe in God use their religions. In my view this really is just another religion in the end.

Atheism is a belief not a religion. There are no set of rules to live by, it's the fact there they are against the set of rules religion and God carry. Yes, God is necessary to make a religion valid. Technically, Buddism isn't a religion either, but a belief.

No ......
It is a conscious decision to believe in what is real .There are no doctrines ,books ,leaders or a ruling board in which we have to give money to .Atheism is the choice of not being a fool who BELIEVES in an imaginary God .We don`t need faith ,We have FACTS that can be tested and Proven .
We don`t have meetings or groups or even studies about our choice .We were taught right from wrong by our Parents .
In fact most of us had religious parents who were HONEST enough not to lie to us .They gave us the basics of religion but did not berate us into "believing "it .
Hope this helps with your understanding Atheism .

It depends on how you define the word "religion", and contrary to what people think, you can define it differently than others since it is a theoretical concept that exists in a theoretical framework. These are matters of Epistemology so most people would not be aware of that.

So if you want to define religion in a way that includes any system of belief regarding metaphysical matters then go right ahead.

No, Atheism is not a religion. Some religious people hate the word religion so much that they try to hurl the word at Atheists. Quite honestly I can not see why they think that their own status is an insulting word.

it is how mixed up and perplexed society is. There are Christians who say that they do no longer look to be religious, yet they are and now there are atheists that say they are religious yet are no longer, or do no longer comprehend what the religion is declared as. this is declared as secular humanism. a faith is a collection of ideals that are practiced. An atheist can prepare their ideals, yet i do no longer comprehend what those practices are. So in case you're making a e book, you will be able to desire to have some practices. maybe make it a humanist e book. Humanism is actual the religion of atheism.

No. The word atheism means no religion.

All religions have rules/code of conduct, rituals such as prayer, religious holidays, and a god/goddess figure(s). Atheism has none of these things.

Religion. With an "i'. Sorry, not to be rude, just letting you know that you mispelled.

Okay, religion necessarily entails a belief in some higher power. Atheists, by definition, don't believe in a higher power.

Theist - the belief in a higher power
A - not

A-theist = not believing in a higher power. So, no it couldn't really be a religion because atheism is the lack of belief, rather than a distinct belief.
