Filing "Married Filed Jointly" is your best way to go, especially if one of you doesn't have a lot of taxable earnings. There are numerous benefits to filing "Married Jointly"... the standard deduction is a bit higher and you are eligible for things like Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, etc.
Also know that taxation of personal wages is indeed unconstitutional (illegal?), yet still widely practiced (and enforced) by the IRS and US Government. Check out the film "America: Freedom to Facism" for some very interesting, legitimate information about U.S. History in regard to income tax.

Married couples normally get the best deal by filing a joint return. It doesn't matter if one of them didn't have any income at all, you still get the best rates by filing jointly.
When you file jointly you get 2 personal exemptions, one for each of you. You do not claim each other as dependents.
BTW, ignore the IDIOT that claims that taxation of wages is illegal. He's totally without a clue. The government's right to levy income taxes is codified in the 16th Ammendment to The Constitution, Title 26 of the US Code, and over 90 years of case law including numerous Supreme Court decisions. Anyone who takes advice to the contrary risks financial ruin as well as total loss of freedom, i.e. prison time.

A spouse can never be claimed as a dependent. But you can file a joint return, which will get you both exemptions and end up financially the same as claiming a dependent. You have to claim the total of both people's incomes on the joint return.
