.mac has its advantages, but is not for everyone. For some the ability to sync bookmarks, calendars and contacts between multiple computers is a plus. The online storage they provide is nice in that it mounts on your desktop like a local drive. You can get a 30 trial for free if you're really curious about it.
FWIW - You can use all the iApps without .mac. In iWeb you can export to folder and ftp it to your own host. The advantage to .mac with iWeb is that you get enhanced (AJAX) photo galleries. Apple's Mail.app can be used with any POP3 or IMAP mail service, not just .mac.
Edit: to the poster above me - How is Mac a PC clone? Macs run a completely different Operating System (though the new Intel-based Macs do have the ability to run Windows *shudders*). Why do people get so high an mighty about OSes? Every OS has strengths and weaknesses. Get over yourselves.

you'd be surprised to find that MOST software is built for both MAC and Windows. However, being a computer Tech, and having Macs, Windows, and Linux Boxes in my school, I strongly suggest you aim for Windows. That's a little hard for me to swallow, even as I type it. The Mac OSX operating system is one of the best in the biz, based on FreeBSD, but it is lacking in support for a lot of software that you may want to use. You'd best check into availability prior to getting your Mac.

Like all software / hardware it really depends on what you want to. Use the right tool for the job.
You can use MS Excel to do word processing and graphics, but it is not the best tool for the job.
Also check what the native format of the software is (ie, photoshop was written for the MacOS way before the Windows version).
Generally if you are working in a creative field the Mac has the edge in performace and design. That said - everything is more expensive for the mac and there are less software options available.

Yes it is a good buy if you have a Mac. It really depends on what you like to use. There really is not much of a difference anymore. Graphics etc... In fact Lucas Arts/Industrial Light and Magic has now switched to PC and they make the big movie magic.
The only true thing I really hear and have experienced as a difference is that for beginners Mac is the way to go. Or as exactly explained to me a computer for beginners.

Mac now adays is just a PC clone now. It has very little software support (try to buy some). A real pc with windows (or at least Linux) will be far superior.
