First Sergeant is a staff position, like a Command Sergeant-Major. Master Sergeant and First Sergeant are the same rank, or grade (E-8).

Both are an E-8, The only difference is a Master Sergeant will have a desk job and in charge of a section, and a First Sergeant gets the job of being the highest enlisted man in the COMPANY. He is given the highest responsibility and respect at company level. All of this talk where they are a staff postion,, that is a battalion or Brigade position and they will not be given that. I hope this helps out.

MSG has not been given a command or has done his command time and a 1st SGT is in charge though general speaking a Top as a 1st SGT is referred to in the army doesn't just dish out orders to a Master SGT.
