Any little bacteria or germs can really harm a cancer patient. Especially during treatment, the immune system is very weakened. Maybe one day when her counts are up, you can take her to a botanical garden or something like that. But it is worse when you're in an enclosed room, so that's why they don't want her to have plants [pets either].
Best wishes.

Flowers For Cancer Patients

2016-11-06 23:56:17 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Many cancer patients have lowered immune systems making them susceptible to infections, bacteria, and other nasty little organisms which are harmless to the rest of us.

Live plants can harbor bacteria in the dirt and standing water in the flower vase can grow mold and Pseudomonas, which could cause pneumonia.

This rule is only when the cancer patients immune system is being compromised by treatment. It's temporary.

This particular patient can probably just have someone look out for her plants or she could keep them in a separate room. She probably should limit the time she is around them until after her chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments are over.

Plants and flowers pose two theoretical infection hazards. Vase water and soil in plants contain large concentrations of potential nosocomial (infections contracted as a result of being hospitalized; hospital-acquired) pathogens and decaying organic matter may contain fungus. Having plants and flowers in intensive care units and in rooms of immuno-suppressed patients should be discouraged. Plants and flowers should be restricted from rooms of severely immunosuppressed patients.

Also, when caring for an immuno-suppressed patient at home special care needs to be taken regarding the water they drink and the types of food they are eating. They can only drink sterilized water. They cannot eat any fresh vegetables or fruit, and everything needs to be cooked to certain temperatures to ensure that the food is free of pathogens.

Cancer pts are immunocompromized from the chemotherapy and radiation treatments they receive for their cancer.
Plants and fresh fruits and veggies have "critters". or potentially infections diseases on them. They are harmless to a person who has an intact immune system, but can be life threatening to a cancer pt who is suceptible to all kinds of infections.

It is something called neutropenic precautions and it is because the chemotherapy reduces their immune system. They can get sick from what are normally considered to be harmless bacteria, and that is why the doctors won't allow them to have live plant. The plants and carriers have large quantities of bacteria and it could make them very ill. They are also not allowed to have black pepper on their meals.

Most cancer patients have weakened immune systems from their treatments. Live plants can carry germs and disease as well as any bugs that could be hidden in them
