I think she means: Does your cat communicate with you? Sure all animals can communicate - it is up to the listener to "listen" and interpret what they are saying.

Yes. Sometimes we talk in her language, (people can't tell if it's her or me!) & sometimes in mine, & sometimes in both. Way beyond the "Ne-OW!" which means now, or when I tell her I'm serving her breakfast & she's not ready, the "Ne-ot-neow." (Not now.) Some people think cats only "talk" when they want something. Not true. The other night, she had the evening crazies & kept coming into my office with two very specific words. I checked that sha enough food, yes; I tried to play w/her & she wouldn't play. Finally I just asked: "What is it you WANT?" & she distinctly said: "I doon't ne-o," & went to take a nap in her donut bed. She talks in whole sentences, appropriate to the situation. She understands perfectly when I say "Wait for me, I'll be right back." Or, "Just give me a minute, I'll be right with you." Cats love to communicate with you, & as the guy in Lillian Jackson Brauns's books believes, the more you talk to them, the more they learn. Don't let anyone tell you differently! If they say their cats don't (or can't) talk to you, it's because they're not listening. So there.

Oh yeah.

My husband and I each have "our own" cat. Sophie is his. When she wants to get brushed, you would NOT believe the cute little suck-up noises she makes. It's like she's talking in a baby voice.

When she wants me to feed her, she'll toss her head and yip at me.

Poppy is a Maine Coon type and so she doesn't say much. But she makes this funny noise that sounds sort of like an eagle. I usually don't know what she's saying unless she's standing by her food bowl at the time.

Sophie's message is always quite clear.

I have a male Tonkinese and they are highly verbal. He has over 30 different vocalizations that I recognize and he uses them to tell me what he needs, or what is going on outside the house. He listens to the intonations of our words (his humans) and he vocalizes using the same intonations - at another point in time, when he wants to communicate something, or just to be part of the conversation. If we get into a long conversation, you bet he will walk right between us and mimic our intonations.

We are in awe of this intelligent fur being, because once he figured out we were trying to communicate, he took over "the program". I have some tape of this which I think I might put up on his blog site. He knows I like his trills and warbles and when I am too sleepy in the mornings, he will actually make up a string of them that sounds like music, just like a bird would. You have to hear it to believe it. Tonks are extremely intelligent and have senses like radar. He doesn't normally "meow" like a regular cat, he saves that for when he feels ignored "what! you are treating me like mere cat!"

Yes, my cat talks to me all the time! And different sounding meows mean different things. I've had him for about a month now, so I am gradually learning his 'language.'

When he's hungry, his meows are long and pleading. It's like he's asking, "Where's my food?" And when he's startled, he gives a short little meow that sounds like "mee!"

I just read on Wikipedia that cats can make about 100 different vocal sounds, whereas dogs only make about 10. Crazy, huh?

they talk indirectly. cats are funny and aren't always straightforward to figure out. I have two, and many times they will greet me at the door when I come home, other times they'll walk away when I enter, and other times they're too busy sleeping to come greet me. I think the more you talk to your cat, the more he'll talk back to you and acknowledge you. once you get to know your cat, you'll realize he communicates with you a lot.
