For some reason it seemed that yesterday everyone was getting pulled over , well at least 2 other people I know in town, it seems like me and one of my other friends who got pulled over around the same place got the same ticket.... for running a yellow light? Is there a new law in oregon I don't know about or are the state troopers having to meet some kind of quota? of course this ticket is going to be contested but will I have a better chance of doing the trial under affidavit or just going to court, And if we go to court will he have to bring the recording even if it is against him? He stated on tape he felt it was a close call but felt I really should not have gone through that yellow light which would acually be helpful for me I think :) your thoughts please ... oh and the ticket for running a yellow light, my very first ticket! $242.00

Just to let everyone know I didn't punch it so to speak , yes I did enter the intersection while it was yellow not green, no it did not turn red the police officer even said that in the conversation he recorded it was yellow and I don't even own a cell phone not a big fan when I leave it's to get away from my hubbie and the kids for a while so bringing a phone with me isn't very tempting :)

No.... Your front tires have to be behind the first pedestrian crosswalk line, or the prolongation of the curb (invisible line). If you were in the intersection when it turned red and it was yellow when you crossed the pedestrian crosswalk, then you didn't run the light. I would fight it, because cops are human too. I doubt that he is trying to fill a quota, because quotas are illegal. And I doubt he has a personal vendetta against you. Take it to court, and let the judge decide. Good luck.

If you are already in the intersection when the light changes to yellow, no problem. If you are not, and the light turns yellow, DO NOT enter the intersection. If you do, you can and will get a ticket. It is a moving violation. $242 (around $250) sounds about right for that type of violation. Were you already in the intersection when it changed? If not, what are you going to contest?

If you entered the intersection while the light was still yellow, they can't give you a ticket. And most people don't fight tickets, so a lot of time, if you show up, the officer won't and you'll automatically win. The officers have other things they're supposed to do than show up for court dates for tickets they wrote weeks before. I'd say you have a good chance to win this one. Good luck!

Last time I read the law, if you have not cleared the intersection before the light turns red, legally, you ran a red light. Unless you are already in the intersection when the light turns yellow, you don't have time to clear the intersection. Many officers say 'running a yellow' because its easier than explaining the actual law.

I live in oregon too and they will give you a ticket any opportunity that they can. It's a money thing. Thats why so many cities here are now installing camera's so they can ticket more people which means more money for city & state. If you go to court I would tell them that you were unable to stop safely without putting other drivers at risk and had to proceed through the yellow light.

If you are past the white line when they light turns yellow you can not get a ticket. If you speed up to get through the yellow light you can. You learn in drivers ed that yellow me slow down/stop. NO there is no quota.

First, let me assure you that there are no quotas. They let us write as many tickets as we want.
Second, a yellow signal means caution and is a warning that the light is about to change. Many people believe that they entered an intersection on a yellow signal because that's the last thing that they saw, but usually the Police Officer has a much better view, and you may just be mistaken.
Third, entering an intersection on a yellow signal is just dumb. Was it because stopping was just too much of an imposition or were you perviously occuppied with a cell phone call? I simply cannot understand how people who don't possess the requisite skills to walk and chew gum at the same time, somehow believe that they have the skills to operate a motor vehicle in traffic and yack into a cell phone at the same time.

No not at all! I've seen millions of people go through the red at the last second behind me. I always like to count the cars that speed quickly after the light turns yellow and theres an average of 5 that file closely behind.

That sucks. Well technically, if you're too close to the intersection to slow down on a yellow light, then you an go, but if you were coming from far off and speeding up to make the light, then that might be why you got the ticket...

Why would the cop lie about you running a red light? Do you think he has a quota to fill or something? It's fair you got a ticket, and it's lucky there was no semi on the cross street.
