Vandergrift girl, 16, dies after party
By Chuck Biedka
VALLEY NEWS DISPATCH
Wednesday, January 17, 2007
Authorities are investigating the death of a 16-year-old borough girl who died after attending a party Sunday where authorities say underage drinking took place.
Samantha Lynn Scheuring, of Wallace Street, and formerly Shaler, became ill Sunday evening in an apartment in the 200 block of Longfellow Street, officials said.
She died early the next day.
The coroner's office made the report public on Tuesday, after being closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Westmoreland County Chief Detective Michael Brajdich said detectives and Vandergrift police are checking to see how Scheuring and other minors at the party obtained alcohol.
Police said Westmoreland County 911 received a call at about 10:40 p.m. Sunday, and Vandergrift police and an ambulance crew were sent to the apartment.
Attempts to resuscitate the girl were unsuccessful.
Police said no one else at the party became ill.
County Coroner Ken Bacha said the girl was pronounced dead at the scene just after midnight Monday.
"Alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in her death," Bacha said. An autopsy didn't reveal a cause of death, and it will take several weeks for a toxicology report to be completed, he said
A blood-alcohol level wasn't made public yesterday.
Police said they did not find illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia on those attending the party, but they did find a large amount of beer and liquor.
Police chief Joe Caporali said some adults and minors attended the party. No charges have been filed in connection with the death.
"We're still investigating," Caporali said.
Lt. Casimer Maszgay said officers have investigated several other reports of underage drinking in the same building during the past year or so.
The party was held on the eve of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when school was closed.
Scheuring's mother, Lisa, said her daughter was not supposed to be at the party.
Scheuring was a Kiski Area High School student.
Youth counselors from St. Vincent College were at the school yesterday to help students when they arrived, Superintendent John Meighan said. He said students and staff were saddened by the news.
St. Vincent's prevention unit director Donna Kean said an intervention specialist works in district schools each week. The counselor was there yesterday to listen and help.
Dr. Oscar Bokstein, of UPMC Presbyterian, said teenage drinkers usually consume a lot of alcohol in a hurry, and that puts them at risk for alcohol-related injury or illness.
"Smaller girls are particularly at risk," he said.
Even when people are old enough to legally drink, consuming too much can lead to problems, he said.
"Twenty-one drinks at 21 is an example," he said.

Other than alcoholism, liver disease or losing your family and friends??? Well, you could end up in jail or dead if you drive.
