Just try traditional pubs in off streets. Avoid obvious places such as Leicester Square, Soho or Piccadily Circus especially at weekends.
There's a couple of large pubs just at the bottom of Trafalgar Square down Whitehall on the left handside (sorry i don't know their names) which are quite out of the way and i guess the clientele would be older there. I've only passed by but it looks nice and friendly, i think that one of them doesn't play music so good if you don't want to shout while having a conversation :)

where abouts in london do you want? Fullers Pubs are good and they have great beer, try some London Pride.
