this is a difficult question.

yes we should have.

the first bomb made it clear that we had a new weapon that could literally decimate japan. it was this that convinced the military and civilian leadership that japan could never win the war.

the second bomb is debatable but the us was doing everything it could to end the war quickly, not just for the obvious reasons.

the soviets were getting ready to invade japan. since the war in europe was over the soviets started making plans for attacking the japanese. this was a problem for the us because it was clear that the soviets wanted to capture land that it could use as a 'buffer' just as it had done in eastern europe. this is also the time that the cold war is beginning, the us didn't want the soviets to have any new territory with good year-round access to the pacific.

therefore the us was doing everything it could before the soviets could begin an assault on japan.

We could have not dropped the bombs, and waited until Japan finished developing their A-bombs and dropped them on US targets. Japan had a successful A-bomb test, Hiroshima was the only logical place the bomb could have been built and the Japanese Navy shipyard at Nagasaki was where the submarine aircraft carriers were being built.

Belive it or not, thousands of lives was saved by dropping both bombs. Japan would of fought to the death to repel any invasion of the home land. Iwo Jima is a real good case in point. 10's of thousands on both sides died in that 30 day battle. I've heard that in was the US's fault that Japan attcked Peal Harbor. In the past several years. The US cut off the oil and raw materials. That We was selling them. The reason they were cut off. Is that Japan invaded Indochina. The rape of Nanking, read about that. Japan was in talks to join the Axis with Germany and Italy The fleet in Pearl was the only thing in the way between Japan and the west coast of the USA.

Yes and yes. We did not ask for the Japanese to invade us. They did it to bring us into the war. The only other action that would have brought the Japanese to the point of surrender, other than dropping the bomb on them would have been a full scale invasion of Japan, which we were prepared to do. This would have cost ten's of thousands of American lives with no guarantee of success. The dropping of the A-bomb was regrettable and I am sure that I will never understand the feelings felt by Truman when he had to order the deaths of thousands of Japanese. But I do believe that Truman felt much more regret for his decision than Tojo did for his (Pearl Harbor).

Of course,
Is not like US just dropped the nukes for fun. It was a way to prevent the Japanese from doing more atrocities around Asia and the Pacific islands. It serves both as a preventive action and a punishment.

No definitely not. From the little I have read about it a lot of American generals and stuff said it was completely unnecessary and that they were on the brink of surrender and that it was done to test the bombs.

Whoever says that it saved alot of lives are talking ****.
