i'll keep this very simple for you:

1. yes you need to file. even if you were under the filing requirement amount, you may be eligible for a refund.
2. you don't need to wait for your parents to file their return. your income is your own and is unaffected by theirs.
3. yes your parents can claim you if you lived with them and they provided most of your support.
4. if your parents claim you, you claim dependent status on your return.

if you need anymore help, email me. =)

You can file your own taxes if your parents claim you, and if you made enough, you might be required to.

If you lived with them over half the year, and you didn't provide over half of your own support, then they can claim you. Next year when you're 19, they won't be able to claim you any more unless you're a full-time student for at least five months of the year.

If they can claim you, they should. That doesn't mean that you have to wait for them to file their taxes first. If you made under $5150 for the year and all of your income is from your job, then you don't have to file, but if you had anything withheld for federal income taxes, you should file to get your money refunded to you. Fill out a 1040EZ form - you can download it at irs.gov, and it's easy enough you should be able to do it yourself from your W-2, just take it one line at a time and follow the instructions. There's a box on it to check if you're a dependent - if your parents can claim you, check that box. There's no problem if you file before they do, it won't hurt them or you.

If they can't claim you as a dependent, then you could earn up to $8450 before you'd have to file - again, if anything was withheld for federal income taxes, you should file to get it refunded to you.

Good luck.

you could report and get a reimbursement in case you have one coming. Legally in case you may properly be claimed, whether no one claims you, you at the instant are not allowed to declare your self. it is not a hundred% sparkling out of your question whether you may properly be claimed. How previous are you? have been you an entire time student in the process the 12 months? How lots did you're making for the 12 months? looking on how lots you made, it ought to or ought to no longer matter whether you declare your self or no longer. in case you made below $5700, it won't; over that, that's going to.
