I like to use the initials of names.
Example: Jeffery Donald
I would call him J.D.

My friend named her son after his father Larry. To distinguish between them he was called junior. Of course he hated it so instead of Larry Junior, he became L.J.

So maybe you could abbrev Curtis to C.T. because it has 2 syllables. Otherwise I guess Curt would be your best bet.
