Alright... when you have a color like yellow-orange do need to add more yellow or more orange? and which color do add to which (like you know how you start with the lighter color first is it the same when you mix intermediate colors? )

It depends on the paint or other media you are using. Yellow-orange is exactly how it sounds: 1/2 yellow and 1/2 orange. It's a visual thing, so you have to base it on how strong the yellow is that you're using as opposed to the orange. I usually start with the lighter color and gradually add bits of the darker color. A way to tell if it's right in the middle is to paint swatches on a piece of illustration board and use them as your comparisons.
