I'm not sure whether to be joyous or angry. Part of me wants to be happy for the parents who are about to recieve a beautiful, pure being to cling to them for most if not all its beautiful young years.
The other half wants to curse them for punishing the child, for putting a new human into this world full of chaos, lies, agony, butchery, and 10,000 religions damning the child to hell for not obtaining their special kind of insanity.
Which image do you conjure up when you hear the news?
(Note: For obvious reasons I did not put this in the pregnancy section)

Having fewer kids is not going to solve anything because the ones who are rejected are already doomed. Overpopulation or not. Still doomed.

A child is always a joyous occasion. There is nothing more beautiful than being alive. You need to lighten up. None of my children are "punished" by being in the world. All that you describe above is part of the nature of our species. It has never been any other way. If you are not happy being alive and think you are being punished by your parents for having created you - then kill yourself.

Pregnancy can be a joyous occassion if the child is conceived in love or, at the very least, is welcomed into this world in love. For far too many children it is damnation itself, to be born into an abusive family, or one that cannot provide the love and nurturing it needs, or into a society that practices hatred, evil, and cruelty.
It is also a tragedy when a child is born with a horrid disease or horribly malformed, sometimes to the point that it cannot survive no matter how skilled the doctor or advanced the technology. This is not the fault of any person, but of God (if you believe in God). Can anyone doubt that in some instances even abortion is preferable to bringing a child into a life of horrific suffering?
I think your "other half" is far too cynical but I am glad it is balanced, at least, by your "good side." And thank you for not putting this in the pregnancy section!!

Bringing a child into todays society isn't an evil thing to do. It's what's supposed to happen. If everyone felt the world to horrible to live in and stopped having children, mankind would cease to exist eventually. It's a matter of parents and children making good choices and staying out of trouble. Where there is good there has to be bad. That's what free will is about. Would you want to live in a world where free will is taken away and someone dictates each and every thing that you do? You wouldn't be able to express your opinion on this site without free will. There are laws (though inefficient in some cases) to punish those who choose to be criminals. I wouldn't want to encourage becoming pregnant because of the excrutiating pain of child birth and the fact that the physical aspect is planted solely on the shoulders of the woman. It isn't joyous to everyone.

Pregnancy can be a joyous occasion, depending on who gets pregnant and why.
For people who truly do want the child and are dedicated to loving and nurturing the child, joy. For those who's children are born whole and healthy, joy. For the couple who has been trying for years and finally gets one to take, joy.
For people to whom the pregnancy was an Oops, probably not so joyous. For those who find that the child will be born and suffer because of some genetic, drug or disease caused malady, probably not so joyous. For the woman who is raped or molested and finds that she is pregnant, not so joyous.
For me pregnancy is a biological function, no more a miracle than a thousand other things that happen in the world and the universe.
There is no one way to look at pregnancy.

I'm the mother of three wonderful sons, and I can tell you with all honesty that pregnancy and birth are the most joyous of all things. It's the raising them that brings on the insanity, lies, chaos, and cursing.

In our family, a child is a joy and is protected from that crap until they are a young adult. By the time we're sixteen... most of us enjoy calling this world on it's crap...

No, not when there are already thousands of children dying daily throughout the world who could have been saved.

The pregnancy means nothing to me. Now the birth is another story. As long as God is active in the affairs of man, we should not fear bringing children into the world.

I can't identify with your second scenario at all.
Since I abhor children, I can't really get excited about someone else having one because I really and truly don't understand or relate to how they feel.
But I guess I'm pleased if they're happy about it. Although sometimes I'm tempted to offer my sympathies.
