Anyone have any first hand experience? How long are your stays? Is it practical to do it for a significant period of time? Any drawbacks that aren't well known?

Your query is like that of a man on a river bank asking somebody swimming about his experience, how deep is the water and are there any dangerous fish. Any amount of reassurance the man would give would never convince you to step into the water. You have to jump in; And I tell you it is a very enervating experience. I was not in for heroics but wanted to help.I chose Humanitarian aid. It is the most potent weapon the United States can deploy against terrorism, Providing food for one’s enemies d fulfills a basic teaching of Jesus Christ,It may incidentally help ou foreign policy.

When you feed hungry people -- and help them solve other problems you create We are labelled the world over as enemies of the poor and the oppressed, By catering to the need of the poor and the oppressed people concretely we make clear that we are their friends.

We always hear the world shortage of food. But the lack if not of food to eliminate chronic hunger but the political and spiritual will to bring about change.. We have and also grow enough food to feed everybody What we need is more political will and more spiritual will and faith.I distinctly remember the long fast by one of our senators against the Congress act to eliminate the House Committe on hunger.Such callous actions defame the USA .Sometimes when you are in the field before the hundgry millions you really become frustrated whether you really can do anything. At such a passe I always remeber Mother Teressa's words,*“You do the thing that is in front of you.”

If only you were to see the needs of the hundgy people in our own country you would not require any more persuasion-the experiences , the duration and the risks--to join the Peace Corps When you.see for yourselves the needs of hungry people -- whether in a refugee camp on the other side of the world or at a homeless shelter in their own community that is more than adequate persuasion. You come across people of different faiths and different political philosophies who come there recognizing compassion as a virtue. After studying their approaces to the problem from varying perspectives and the solutions offered -- governmental aid, personal charity, small loans to benefit micro-enterprise, literacy programs and health-care education to improve standards of living helps widen your horizons.
“Some of the most effective programs are public-private partnerships between government and business,”

I do not know whether you are a Christian. If you are all the more reason for you to join the Corps.Bible includes more than 2,000 verses concerning the poor which places a responsibility of them to meet human needs and advocate for the poor and the hundry people.

Do not stand on the bank. Jump in.

“If each of us just did the thing that is in front of us, that would take care of half the problems in the world,”

My cousin was in the Peace Corps for 2 years over in South America. It really depends on where you're stationed and what exactly you sign up for.
You really have to weigh out the pros and cons for yourself. Its a great resume builder, and you learn and help with/about the world, but you leave everything and pretty much have to start over once you come back, and you live like an animal during the time you're there. KNOW what you are getting yourself into. Helping people is awesome, the experience you gain is immeasurable, but sometimes you are in danger and you lose alot of amenities for a long period of time.
I want to join, but you have to have a four year degree first. Check out the website http://www.peacecorps.gov/ before you make your decision, and DONT do any "alternative volunteer groups", because 8 out of ten times they're scams and actually cost you money.
