For a home remedy you can use baking flour or cornstarch. Pat this on the nail to help it clot. Pet stores sell a product called Quikstop which also works really well and is inexpensive. Until it is healed make sure she stays calm especially when on rough surfaces like concrete. Hope this helps.

Hi there,

While the pet stores sell powder for nails to stop bleeding, having a bar of soap handy works just as well. Just sink the nail into he bar. Your goal is to stop the bleeding by helping clotting. If bleeding continues despite this, you should definitely take your dog to the vet as it means that the quick (the visible blood vein) was severely disturbed. Good luck!

baby powder, but hold her paw in place to be sure she doesnt wipe it off right away, and to be sure it will stop bleeding before letting her paw go. Also, I heard baking powder works also.
You could go to the pet store, if one is close by and purchase a powder for this too.

I know you said it was from playing, but in the future, if you cant afford a vet visit, dont attempt to cut his nails either and put him in harms way
This is your dog, you should be able to afford a vet visit at ANYTIME....
But the above does work.

If you can't afford a vet, you shouldn't have pets...

With that said, evidently the broken nail is serious and this IS causing a lot of pain. There could be another problem at hand - WHY is the dog's blood not clotting? You might have a seriously ill dog or it could be that it is a seriously bad broken nail that needs immediate medical attention. This can also get easily infected.

If direct pressure is not helping, please get the dog to a vet ASAP or relinquish your rights and turn him over to the local humane society. This is borderline cruelty and needs to be taken care of!!

Baby powder usally works best to stop it from bleeding. If that doesnt help put a cotton ball on her nail and hold it there until the blood stops. I hope I helped!

If you live near any farming stores ( any place that sells horse stuff) there's a product called "wonder dust" . It's a coagulant and stops bleeding immediatly. I wouldn't let him lick it,however. I used it for a goat whos horn snapped off and left a beating artery showing. It seeled it up in a few minutes..and that was a huge opening. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Use a styptic pencil or powder. It is very cheap and available at pet stores near the nail trimming scissors.
