san salvador is more modern if you look it up on google it will tell you also it has the largest most modern airport in central america

I would say San Salvador simply because more Salvadorians travel back and forth from El Salvador to the States than Costa Ricans.
That's my opinion, but I also have a friend (American) that lives in El Salvador and she says that it's pretty modern and "Americanized", they even pay with dollars on a regular basis.

That would be because the US dollar is the national currency of El Salvador.
Sorry but although I lived in San Jose for a year I have never been to S.Salvador so therefore make the comparison.

San Jose by a longshot. San Salvador has been crippled by war, poverty and earthquakes since the early 1980s and is just now finding itself.
