let them down easy, you can't make yourself love someone no matter how hard you try. Faking it doesn't work either. Tried it, just ended up hurting him in the end, and my intentions were good. I tried, really hard. Let them know unconditionally, that you are just friends and hope that will be enough for them. There are tactful, respectful ways to talk to someone you care about without crushing them, and if it doesn't work, then you may have to resort to harshness

This all depends on the person. If they are someone you want to keep in your life, you have to let them know you don't share the same feelings. Let them down easily and try not to be cocky or mean about it. Remind them of how great it is to have their friendship, but a friendship is all you can offer. Don't try to make the person feel insecure like there is something wrong with them for you to not like them, but just assure them it's not them, it's that you are not attracted in that way.
