I booked flights through delta.com for November. Our trip insurance says that in the event of a bakruptcy where they discontinue flights it will not cover the loss. Is this a big possibility for happening?

Not too likely, no. Airlines operate under bankruptcy protection all the time. Well not all the time... But lot of the major ones have been in it at some point in the last five years - For example United was operating under Chapter 11 for over 2 years and USAirways did 2 separate times over a period of 2 or 3 years. And now they're much stronger than before. In the early 1990s Continental Airlines had a couple stints in bankruptcy protection and now they're better off than most of the other major airlines. So I wouldn't be worried that they're going under anytime soon.

What are you doing buying your tickets for November? lord. The airlines have schedule changes often and know that those times you booked will change several times between now and then. In the unlikely event that Delta is still operating then be sure to call them and verify your flight times. They will notify you of such schedule changes, my advise would be once this occurs to not accept the changes and request a full refund and then go book on a different airline. I have worked in the travel Industry for 20 years and for 4 different airlines and I assure you there is no other airline with as many rude and ignorant employees than Delta. Delta is likely to get bought out by USAir formally America West who bought the troubled airline and decided to drop their own name and keep USAir's, like airline travel wasn't confusing enough already, but at this point it is all rumor and there is no other industry more full of rumors than the airlines. If Delta is bought out by America West/USAir then you have no worries what so ever but expect some schedule changes and hope that the original Delta employees are long gone, I've never dealt with one I liked. In the very slim chance that Delta just shuts down and is not bought up by another carrier other airlines will jump in and accept your ticket under certain stipulations.

No need to worry. Come November, Delta will have been bought by another airline. More than likely the airline that I work for. There is a 0% chance that Delta will be gone by November. Even if they get bought tomorrow (which won't happen) and the airline that buys them out decides to get rid of the Delta name (which may or may not happen), it will take AT LEAST a year before any merger, assimiliation or change takes place. You'll be fine...no need to worry.

No due to Delta just declared bankruptcy not to long ago. They would probably merge with US Airways but keep the Delta name because Delta offers certain services that US airways does not (U.M. and Live animals)
