It's like to hold your ambitions higher than anything . "Your own resolution to succeed" means your ambitions and dreams. Follow your hopes, dreams and wishes and they will guide you.

Mr Lincoln meant that one's resolve (desires, and earnest intentions) are more important than whether you actually succeed. To be intentional about improving is the more important thing.

I think he meant believing that you can succeed is more important than actually doing the deed.

I person must decide and believe that he/she is going to be successful before success can ever follow. You must make a conscience decision to succeed, and you must make this choice in order to succeed. Success does not follow luck, or by chance, it is by plan.

I'd go with either, " If you haven't quit, you haven't failed." or
" If you get knocked down 10 times, get up 11."
