All hounds make wonderful family dogs. It all depends on what you want to hunt.
Beagles are best for rabbits and other small game. Coonhounds will hunt deer, rabbit, coyotes, mountain lion, bear, possum, squirrels, as will a Cur. Bloodhounds will hunt people, but don't trust them to get you your dinner. Remember most hounds are difficult to recall; once they find a trail they tend to go selectively deaf, so be very careful where you let your dog loose.

The Labrador would be the most common breed to fit in your needs, and the Lab has been purpose bred/trained more than any other breed.
But,, if you are an avid bunny hunter get a Beagle.

Depends on what you want to hunt. A Basset Hound would be pretty useless if you wish to go duck hunting. A Labrador is not what you want to go to ground after vermin.
