That's like asking if restaurants are for those who have poor cooking skills or for people who lack the capacity, skills, or resources to make their own food.
So obviously, no. Sure, there are some to whom this applies; however, the majority of people who go to a restaurant aren't there because they burn water...we all have different reasons for being there. Instead of lumping everyone into a general group, ask the customers individually why they came.

People who exhibit generic beliefs with no reasons....yes.
Religion in general....no.
Many people are willing to die for their specific beliefs. That is neither a sign of a weak philosophy or of a person following a template.
Many times due to persecution...the religous are taking the hard and narrow path and not the general template.

A template, yes. For people who cannot form one of their own? No. I believe that there is no truly original thought. Everyone must get their ideas from someone or something. Religion is a more fostering environment to provoke creative thought.

I have a pretty strong philosophy and guess what? I'm a Christian. I have a religion. And I didn't just take it as a pat answer. i have a religion because the other people in it have discovered the same philosophy i did through study, and we joined a community of people who believe that same way.

This is funny. Are you wanting to categorize people that are religious or righteous? If the latter you would be wrong.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and wisdom comes from truth which is the Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of God.
It should be, to be intellectual would be, to be in truth, and that is to have a relationship with the God head(Father Son, and Holy Spirit). I know it isn't though, not by the worlds way.

If everyone believed in their own philosophies, what would be right and wrong? Phil=love Soph=wisdom. Philosophy is the love of man's wisdom, which was never perfect to begin with.

I could think of many theories of why people drift to religion like
- people are really afraid of death
- people like the idea of a higher power that takes care of them and cares for them
- people have a deep-seated need for an authority figure
- people have been immersed in it their entire life
- people have a really poor grasp of how the universe works, the sheer size of it and the timescale we are speaking of so they can't imagine it came to be in a natural way
- people have a need for life to have a 'point' or 'goal'; "you came from nowhere and are going nowhere" seems a bit unsatisfactory if you are looking for a point.
- in a similar fashion, most people believe they are special or unique. My earlier remark of "came from nowhere, going nowhere" sort of violates that center of the universe feeling.
- some of the guys 'selling' religion are really smart and know how to work these fears and weaknesses

Well, that is all some have is religion. If you do nothing but set around drinking beer and watching football games, then that is your religion. Now, I wasn't poking that at you personally, just making a point. What they need is Christ. I used to have religion, then I met the Lord Jesus and received Him as my Savior, now He is my religion.

Religion is a philosophy...to an extent.
Ever read Proverbs?
It's a template for those that choose to use it, not that they can't make thier own.
I've realized that God's plan for me is way better than what I ever thought I could come up with.
