Because we are not politicians. We cannot spend all of our time watching over our representatives. Also, they have their own ideas about how to best serve us. But this is why we have a republic form of government. So that the general populace doesn't have to spend their working life on nothing but politics. Better to pay a few and let the rest run the jobs that power our economy.

Contrary to the ugly rumor, we don't live in a Democracy, we live in a Republic: a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them. Because of that, we don't make the day to day decisions of our government, we chose others to make those decisions for us. Given our confortable status, we have developed an unswerving acceptance of this state and an apathy towards correcting it. Thank god for TIVO or I would have been stuck watching the president's SOTU address the other day.

Because most of the American public are what I like to call "sheeple". They form ideas around a person rather than the idea of the office.
