The best way to get over a fear is to face it... in smaller, less threatening ways working up to the actual real deal.
I sing in front of people, speak, act, and dance but I was absolutely petrified of playing my flute in front of people. I realized that it was because with all the other things, I could "smooth over" a mistake, whereas with the flute I figured a bad note would be sooooo obvious (by the way, not so much it turns out.)
What I did, was arrange to play in front of an audience that wasn't judgmental and would appreciate what I did, even if it wasn't all that good. In my case, it was nursing home residents with Alzheimer's.
For you it might be family (grandparents are great at loving whatever you do) or, as suggested, some friends who know what's up.
I can tell you that I am occasionally a bit nervous playing the flute in front of an audience, but more often I'm not. I'm much more confident. I still play at the nursing home but now they have me play for a much larger group in a central location where staff often find excuses to come listen.

Stage fright is the worst, but the best thing you can do is to practice until you get more comfortable. Some ways to do that:
--Start small--practice in front of the mirror, and then move on to a couple of people you're extremely comfortable with. (Explain the situation to them beforehand.)
--Try going to a karaoke bar with some friends; most people don't have great singing voices but they have fun anyway.
--If you're not part of a choir already, maybe you could join one. That way you'd be able to sing in front of people, but you wouldn't be the only one singing.
--Voice lessons can be expensive, but having training might make you more confident.
I tend to suffer from stage fright myself, but each time you face your fear, you'll feel better about yourself and won't be quite as nervous the next time. Good luck!

My suggestion would be to just keep practicing and singing. Bye doing this, you will get used to how good your voice is, and you'll eventually share your gift without being afraid.
I know from experience. I was in a choir, and I wasn't sure if people liked my voice or not. But as the years passed, my voice got stronger and I became more confident with my singing ability. This will happen with you, too.

1. Sit yourself down and come to grips with the fact that you are fabulous and anybody who doesn't recognize it isn't important anyway.
2. Remember that it's about giving the song everything you can and giving the song an original and honest interpretation. Whether or not you sound like Christina Aguilera or Whitney Houston isn't as important as whether or not you mean what you're singing.
3. Work it.

The same way you get to Carnegie Hall.....
Practice,
Practice,
Practice.
If you are serious then start alone in your room singing like you want to and do it a hundred times. And I don't mean while you are cleaning or in the shower. set up a mic stand and loose yourself like you are onstage.
Then up the ante and do it with 1 or 2 friends watching, or maybe your family, they are bound by blood, use them.
After you have that licked work your way up to bigger and bigger groups.
That is the same way to get over a fear of public speaking.

If I were you, I would start practicing in front of a couple people. Everytime you sing in front of a few, you should invite more people to hear you sing each time, so you get more and more comfortable in front of bigger groups.

Go to your doctor. Or go to a sympathetic doctor. Ask for a prescription for a *beta*-adrenergic blocking agent. Suggest that you have high blood pressure. Suggest a prescription for propranolol or Inderal.
