I have braces on the top. and today they gave me a retainer too. but it makes me gag when i hold my tongue regular. it goes behind me teeth and its plastic. on the sides it has metal to hold it on to my mouth. its removeable. but it makes me gag when i hold my tongue naturally and try to swallow. is it too big, do i have to hold my tongue differently, or will i get used to it? did you have the same problem and what did u do to fix it?

I had a similar problem with my lower retainer. It was a Hawley style, but thicker because there was a spring embedded to put pressure on one tooth. I spoke with a lisp, and for a while I had to remove it before I spoke on the phone. But in time I learned to hold my tongue differently (behind the plastic and curved up) at rest, and to speak clearly around the obstacle.

Of course, you should be sure your orthodontist knows of your problems and has done everything in his/her power to help the situation. But for whatever cannot be modified, I believe you will adapt and learn to work around the obstacle.

My orthodontist picks up telephone messages even on days when the office is closed. And if I call in with a problem like you describe, she answers my message to find out exactly what is going on and tell me what I can change. And if an office visit is required, she will make arrangements to see me outside of office hours. In general, orthodontists know that urgent problems cause more problems and more work if they aren't handled promptly. So have a your parent call the orthodontist office and leave a message immediately if you have a problem.

don't be worried. there is not any longer some thing worried about. merely that's mandatory to continuously have your mouth open wide so as that it makes it extra reachable for the dr. because if he/she messes up you would ought to redo that area that could convey about extra time. contained in the starting up various stress will be placed on your tooth and it is going to reason various discomfort, yet remmerb to eat delicate ingredients like soup. once you should decrease your food into small bites. there is not any longer some thing to be worried about really.
