I suggest checking out your local volunteer center. The volunteer opportunities provided by volunteer centers have typically been checked out by volunteer center staff and validated as a one-time, short-term, or long-term opportunity that is run by a valid non-profit agency. The volunteer centers connect you with all sorts of projects and activities that match your interests. My volunteer center provides a database of over 800 local non-profit agencies that have volunteer opportunities.

Here are some links to help find your local volunteer center:

Maybe you should visit Volunteer Match at http://www.volunteermatch.org . Organizations list the type of activities that prospective volunteers will be conducting, and that will help you create the list you need.

Good luck.

Just a short guideline for you:

Local no-kill animal shelters (SPCA)
Becoming a mentor to someone younger (Big Brothers/Big Sisters)
Visiting with senior citizens or AIDS patients
Soup kitchens and/or clothes drives
Tutoring
Cleaning up the garbage along the roadside
Donating blood (even though I'm afraid of needles and having my blood drawn, I always feel good after I do this)
Toy drives

You can do almost anything to help people in your community. Start small. Hope this helps. Good luck.
