Trail rated is a term chrysler came up with in the last few years in order to emphasize the difference between jeeps with a selectable low range and "true" 4wd, and those without. Until the recent introduction of the cherokee srt8 and the compass, (not sure about the liberty) everything was "trail rated" and didn't need anything to designate it. The cherokee srt8 isn't because it has no selectable low range, and no "true" 4wd, same with the compass. When it comes to older jeeps, if you want to, you can let a dealership know you're interested and for the price of shipping, they'll send you a trail rated badge.
Personally...I could care less.

After owning five different Jeeps I would say the decal is the biggest difference. Just another gimmick to sell you the upgraded model. A basic Wrangler with the base engine suspension and tires will go just about anywhere and stock Jeeps have completed the Rubicon, one of the toughest trails in North America.

Trail rated jeeps are capable of going over the Rubicon Trail, a trail strewn with 12 inch boulders, steep inclines, etc.
Non trail rated Jeeps such as the Compass could not hack the Rubicon.
You can take any vehicle off road if you are driving across a golf course...it depends where you want to go as to whether or not you need a trail rated Jeep.

Trail Rated usualy means it is capable to take rougher off road... non trail rated is like the Compas and 2x4 Libys.

Trail Rated is a sales gimick. My Cherokee is too old to be trail rated, but can kick the but of most "trail rated" jeeps of later years. Any wrangler, cherokee, or older Grand's can handle a ton of stuff.

Go for the Limited. Mechanically, both have the same 4x4 hard parts (axles, drivetrains, transfer case) the only thing the "trail rated" version may have in addition MIGHT be skid plates, but I'm not sure about that. The limited will still be good offroad. Go for it!

Marketing gimmick by Chrysler. They sent me (for free) the "Trail Rated" badge (customer Care 800#). They only verified with my VIN that mine has 4x4. Covered-up a scratch on my lift-gate.
Trail Rated simply means the badged Jeep has 4x4 -any flavor of 4x4 will do for the rating.
