Because it is during the spring, I would normally think about wearing pastel, but it is an afternoon ceremony with a formal evening reception. Can I get away with dark brown satin? or a black dress? Any websites on the etiquette for a spring time black tie evening wedding would really help too!

Yes you can, but it had better be formal, I would go to a dress store (a nice one) and ask for a recommendation.

well a black dress is always handy that is for sure
But since it is spring you want to look blooming as well as formal
Dark brown is very Autumn and although a little black number is always a safe bet, might i suggest that there is nothing wrong with adding a little colour and perhaps splurging by getting jeweled tones. Depending on ones complexion, yellow, purple and Grey tones are all season. Since it's formal attire, and you are a lady I am presuming by the satin query, why not wear elegant separates. Theres always bejeweled tops and elegant trousers or a skirt if one likes. You could also go for lace. Lace is very springish and does justice for both the afternoon as well as the evening.

If you feel you must go with black
Keep your hair flowing...Maybe even lightly curled
Do your makeup with pink hues and dress up that black number with perhaps a funky broach... no old pearl throwbacks... perhaps with amythysts or a yellow stone crust and perhaps a chiffon pastel shawl to go with it... pale yellow or purple
Remember those heels and I think your all set

If you do not have a broach.. A long string of cultured grey pearls or those funky jade strings that are in wouldnt go amiss with the matching shawl... remember flimy and romantic... its a wedding and then i guess you will have to glam up the makeup with charcoal sooty eyes and pink pouty lips

Hope you catch a bouqet

Typically, if an event calls for Black Tie, seasonal rules become moot.

For the other wedding, pastels would be appropriate. A nice lavender would work well, providing this isn't one of the colors chosen for the wedding.

Black tie in March would mean evening wear. Long gown. Personally, I'd try to wear a conservative color, black is o.k. but try to dress it up with a colored shawl or something.
