They are both male, and about 5 months old. I've tried putting catnip on the post, I've tried holding their paws and showing them how, I've even tried the cardboard scratchers, the rope ones, and the carpet ones. Still, they dont even touch them. They prefer my furniture. grrr... any advice? I've never had cats before

Continue trying, do not give up on them. Keep taking their paws and go throught the motions with them.Sounds like you have tried about every kind of scratcher. How about the turbo scratcher, that is round with cardboard in the center with a ball that the can bat around? My little female loves that one. Also put it in front of the furniture that they scratch on.

Most kittens do not care for catnip - wait till they are older. You can rub in a little powdered milk instead. Try standing BEHIND the post and dangle a sting -- their claws will catch onto the post every once in a while and it will become play to them. Also, get a feline nail clipper and keep the tips cut off. Last, but not least, there are sprays that cats HATE -- go look at PetSmart (or similar) and either look around or better yet - ask them. Good Luck -- been there many times!

Continue using their paws to show them how. They are not quite old enough to feel the effects of catnip, it actually doesn't affect them til they are at least 6 months old, closer to a year. Keep trying the catnip - they will notice it before it, and then you won't be able to keep them off it!
Good luck!

place the scratching post in front of the furniture where they usually like to scratch. Don't give up on the catnip. Yours may have been too old. Fresher catnip may work better.

Put vinegar where ever they are scratching that you do not want them too. They do not like the smell. It works but is unpleasant for you for a while. Another trick that I use is a squirt gun. Every time you catch them clawing something that they are not supposed to yell no and squirt them in the face. They hate it and will eventually stop.
Good luck.

Put double sided tape on the furniture... cats hate sticky stuff on their paws... they'll learn not to do it soon. And please don't hold their paws onto the scratching post, they don't like that. Go to http://www.kittencare.com/ they have great advice there.

Well since I had experience with cats the best thing you can do is let the cats grow over time. Unless you want to send your cats to a professional.
