I am with Bella above. I was raised in an upper middle class conservative Christian family. I consider myself more of a faith "fanatic" than my family, but I definitely have trouble relating to some of the more so called conservative Christians. I run a non-profit for Military people, which gives me a great opportunity to live out my faith in front of the non-Christian world. But many Christians still cling to "birds of a feather flock together" theories, which are absurd if you have ever actually seen a Bible. I have been known to even use cussing occasionally as a tool to reach my Marines, but even discussing that I do that is a big no-no with the blue haired ladies at most Churches. In the end all Christians should "question everything" as the Bible says - so we SHOULD all be free thinkers.

I would say that they don't have any qualms with free thinkers, but I also entertain the idea that most people, regardless of religious association, have no issue with free thinkers...the only people who would are those whose lives are threatened, their lives being dependent on the control and possible suppression of everyone else.

We think that "free thinker" is a false and misleading label for people that are actually brainwashed but don't know it. And the label merely enhances this delusion. As if nobody else has free thought.

You know you’re an Atheist Fundamentalist when:

1.) You believe that all life “evolved” due to a spontaneous explosion in space. But say the naturalistic Mayan belief that the Sun is our Father and the Moon is our Mother is absurd.

2.) You say it is impossible for God to always exist but believe the universe accomplished this impossible feat. And then you box yourself in by saying at one time there was nothing and that 0+0=1 is good math for “free thinking” people. To deny it would be blasphemy against the faith of science.

3.) You believe that “religion causes wars” and that an atheist world without any kind of moral precepts other than what is borrowed from those same religions would produce world peace. And this explains why Joseph Stalin was such a peace loving guy.

4.) You believe that amino acids assembled themselves into proteins and then those proteins assembled themselves into reproducing living cells that evolved into fish and later evolved into humans. And then at the same time you say “faith” is a ridiculous concept.

5.) That the conservative extinction rate in the fossil record of 10 to 100 species per year doesn’t pose a mathematical problem for species that take millions of years to evolve. And today’s extinction rate of 27,000 species per year doesn’t complicate this problem. And that we should let the “experts” do the hard math for us.

6.) You believe that amino acids spontaneously chained into proteins although you could try a trillion combinations a second for 5 billion years and still not use up all the possible non-protein combinations. And even if that did happen you only have one protein for your first “simple“ cell. And yet, you claim “it must have happened or we wouldn’t be here.” And that’s much smarter than believing in Tarot cards.

7.) Although, there is absolutely no proof that evolution ever happened you hostilely point to adaptation as “proof” that “micro-evolution” is happing today. But flat earth believers pointing to a flat spot in the Sahara Desert as being a “micro flat earth” would be ridiculous.

8.) You loudly proclaim that Finch beaks adapt from large to small and that this “proves” evolution in action. Although we already know the DNA for large and small beaks already exists in both populations, and absolutely no new data is being created out of thin air. But rejecting the absurdity of evolution is being closed minded and religious.

9.) You believe in the beginning there was nothing and then it exploded! And since science has “proven” that there is no God it must have happened that way no matter how absurd it may sound. That’s not superstitious.

10.) You believe that all the works of Beethoven and Mozart are a result of this same random explosion in space caused by nothing. And only people willing to “think freely” can grasp the wisdom behind this great “truth“ of science.

11.) You believe that the second law of thermodynamics is good science as long as you don’t apply the principle of entropy to the process of evolution. Although this is identical to believing in perpetual motion you flatly reject that you believe in magic.

12.) You praise the great wisdom of science like a religion and yet scorn all other religions. And by speaking in big sounding “scientific” concepts maybe nobody will notice how superstitious you actually are.

This might help...

Freethought holds that individuals should neither accept nor reject ideas proposed as truth without recourse to knowledge and reason. Thus, freethinkers strive to build their beliefs on the basis of facts, scientific inquiry, and logical principles, independent of the factual/logical fallacies and intellectually-limiting effects of authority, cognitive bias, conventional wisdom, popular culture, prejudice, sectarianism, tradition, urban legend and all other dogmatic or otherwise fallacious principles. When applied to religion, the philosophy of freethought holds that, given presently-known facts, established scientific theories, and logical principles, there is insufficient evidence to support the existence of supernatural phenomena.

Note to Je veux changer le monde (I want to change the world): Ah, the little Afghan girl with the green eyes. Those eyes have haunted a whole generation.

Note to Mikearion: I can see from your response that you will never understand what freethinkers really stand for or their arguments. You'll always believe what you want to and nothing more.

I won't answer this question because I am not a Christan, but isn't it worded a little...

Negatively.

Your question actually implies that Christians are not free thinkers at all.

Whether I agree or not is my own affair, but any potential Christan answerers are likely to be rather riled by the question.

Those two "things" don't have to stand apart. I'm a free thinker. I'm a Christian by choice. So, to answer your question.....I like me. I'm glad I use my brain to think with, and I'm glad I have God in my heart.

Why Christians? Don't base your opinion on a group just because of the crazies on Yahoo. They're not all like that.
