Since you are a big fellow I would say learn Jujitsu or Judo that way you can use your weight to your benefit.

every fighter is unpolished before they begin training, so that has nothing to do with anything. being big is ok too. I've seen guys who are 250+ in karate, tae kwon do and everything else under the Sun. Myself I tip the scales at close to 300lbs. I practice and teach Pencak Silat and Kali and am very good at both. So really its all in how you approach things.

I have been in Martial arts since 1973. I rank in several different styles. My suggestion is Ryu Kyu Kempo. Go to www.dillman.com and look for one of his affilliated schools located all over the USA. They teach real Karate. Kyusho, Tuite pressure point knockouts and how to win a realistic fight in a couple of seconds. It changed the way this big guy did martial arts forever. It will keep you interested for the rest of your life and will also teach you how to defend yourself when you are 70.
Check them out.
I hope this helps

ask you self what kind of fighting can you do in street clothes..this is some thing the karate types forget..you wont be in PJs in a fight..now kick boxing gives a little of every thing..keep you kicks low and learn a few grappling moves and few good punches..and learn a combo..and maybe even a throw hear and there..weapons are good as well chances are your attackers will be in a group..you know that cowards roam in groups..it will be a slim chance of one on one combat...

Tae Kwon Do is the only martial art that is an olympic sport. My husband and my kids take classes 3 times a week - they love it. They learn really good fighting techniques and practice sparring all the time. There are also many take offs of TKD also that seem to be pretty good.

Boxing and wrestling or Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu, if your a beginner Boxing and Wrestling will be easier for you but both combonations of martial arts should cover most of the bases and allow to dominate any unexperience opponents.
