You shouldn't date because of reasons of how your friends might feel. You should date for you. How do you feel about him? Do you like him? Do you want to get to know him?
You could try getting to know him as friends first to see if you like him enough to date him. There is always going to be someone who may not like who you date, whether he is a police officer or a butcher. You decide because of who you like not because of who your friends may feel comfortable around.
Does this guy respect you? Does he treat you well? Etc....
Have fun and get to know him for you.

Go ahead and date him. Being a police officer is a very respectable posistion to have. If your friends are doing illegal things, but might want to spend less time with them yourself.

In other words, your friends are up to illicit activities, and you're afraid your boyfriend will have to bust them.
Well, it's not your responsibility to cover for them. You go ahead and date the cop, and your friends will just have refrain from their illicit activities in his presence - or better yet, cease them all together. As a cop, he won't be looking for reasons to bust them (ie, if he's a passenger in a car that is going five miles over the speed limit), but he will have to step in if he sees an actual crime (pot-smoking, etc).

This is going to sound very snobby but in this case you have to chose what will make you happy regardless of your friends. I'm sure over time if they start out uncomfortable around him it will get better so I say that if it is what you want then go for it!
Good luck

If you like him, date him. Your friends will get used to him unless they all sell drugs. And if that's the case you should question who your friends are. Cops are normal people I'm sure they break laws here and there in their free time.

Your friends will get over it if they are real friends. If you like the cop go for it. And there is nothing hotter than a man in uniform:)
