What can she do to stop this and to help her sleep through the night

She can "tough love" it. They say letting him cry it out for a couple nights will end the waking cycle. It will usually be resolved by the third night. Or after the baby goes to sleep have your friend leave a bottle of warm water in the crib (it will be room temp when he wakes up) and when he wakes up he can get that bottle.

My daughter is almost two and wakes up for milk too sometimes (not every night). I'll often get her a bottle because I figure she must be feeling hungry. She's a growing girl and who am I to decide to starve her during the night if she's hungry. We, as adults, have the option of walking down to the fridge and getting a snack if we are hungry in the middle of the night, unfortunately, the babies don't. I try to remember that. When we are hungry we get ourselves food. When they are hungry, they depend on us.

Your friend should also try feeding the baby something filling right before bed. I often give my daughter some instant oatmeal. It's sweet yet healthy and filling.

Does this bother your friend, or you? Seriously, sometimes people just like to assume their friends and family have problems and/or are doing the wrong thing. It is up to your friend.

If your friend is truly commited to stopping this the best thing to do is to leave a sippy cup/baby bottle of water beside the bed for the child and be sure they are eating enough during the day. Then only offer the water at night.

However it is common for them to be too busy during the day to eat and to make up for it at night. Also if kids are missing out on Mommy or Daddy time during the day they will find a way to make up for it. So these are things that need to be considered.

2 year olds should not drink from bottles!
Every night before my 2 year old goes to bed I give him either a banana or a bowl of warm oatmeal. It fills his belly so he won't wake up hungry during the night. Just tell your friend to feed him right before bed. That should help

He probably shouldn't be drinking out of bottle at two. They recommend breaking a child of the bottle at 12 months. But anyway, she should let him take water to bed. Never juice, soda or milk because it can settle on his teeth and rot them. But a little water won't hurt.
